Alfabs Raises the Roof Alfabs awarded first ever ‘Judges Commendation’ for Australian Steel Institute Awards

Alfabs has won the Australian Steel Institute’s NSW Engineering Project Steel Excellence award for the Sydney Metro Central Station Northern Concourse roof project and received the first ever Judges Commendation in the National ASI Awards.

Alfabs Engineering, a local, family-owned heavy engineering company, was named the winner of the Australian Steel Institute’s 2022 Steel Excellence award in the NSW Engineering Projects category for its work on the new roof installation, as part of the Sydney Metro Central Station project.
“To be able to walk through such an iconic facility, look up, and know that our steel is in the structure of the largest and busiest railway station in Australia forever, is a source of great pride”, said Rachael Frew, Alfabs Engineering Project Administrator.

The Australian Steel Excellence Awards promote excellence in Australian steel, profiling the beauty and versatility of Australian steel as a design and prime building material. The Engineering Projects award was judged on overall design merit, construction efficiency, environmental sustainability, and buildability.
“The versatility of steel, with its high strength-to weight ratio, made it the ideal material for timely fabrication and erection.”, said Mitch Binns, Alfabs Fabrication Project Coordinator. “We were able to fabricate steel across large, self-supporting spans, without the need to rely on the existing heritage structure for support. Steel is one of the few products that could allow this to happen successfully.”

“We engaged early with our client, Laing O’Rourke, to optimise the design for efficient fabrication and installation” says Jimmy Purcell, Alfabs Group Quality Manager. “We established a pre-assembly yard and site office on our premises to collaborate with Laing O’Rourke and other delivery partners for all fabrication, coatings, preassembly, and disassembly. Our Alfabs Transport team then transported the modules to Sydney, for Alfabs Site Services’ install”.

“This award forms part of the Alfabs journey”, says Jason Torrance, Alfabs Group General Manager. “This validates our dedication to our Alfabs people, clients, and our continuous commitment to safety, quality and delivery.”
